What is 702 Zirconium?
Zirconium 702 is a commercially pure zirconium grade (typically >99% Zr) valued for its outstanding corrosion resistance and distinctive dark‑gray appearance. It naturally forms a stable oxide layer that protects the metal in everyday environments, including sweat and saltwater.
Why Use 702 Zirconium?
- Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: Performs well in harsh environments and daily carry.
- Durable & Tough: Good strength with excellent resistance to wear in normal use.
- Distinctive Look: Naturally dark gray; can be transformed into a deep black finish.
- Skin‑Friendly: Comfortable for frequent handling.
- Premium Feel: Substantial weight and a refined, modern aesthetic.
Our Black Zirconium Process
After machining, we heat zirconium until it is red hot. As the part cools, the heat causes the natural oxide layer on its surface to thicken dramatically, changing its color from gray to a rich, jet‑black finish.
- What Happens: Heat accelerates the formation of zirconium oxide. As the oxide grows thicker, it absorbs more light and appears black.
- Why It’s Durable: Unlike a coating or paint, this finish is part of the metal itself — it won’t chip or flake off.
- Result: A bold, permanent black appearance that enhances both durability and style.
Why Zirconium Costs More
- Flammability in Machining: Zirconium chips and dust are highly flammable — even capable of igniting spontaneously if not carefully managed. Machining requires strict safety protocols, specialized tooling, and fire‑prevention systems.
- Raw Material Rarity: Zirconium is less common and more expensive to source than many other metals used in pens. Scarcity and processing complexity increase material cost.
- Added Finishing Steps: The carefully controlled heat‑treatment to achieve the signature black finish adds time and labor.
These factors mean zirconium parts take more care and investment to produce — but the result is a unique, premium material unlike anything else.
Key Characteristics
- Composition: Commercially pure zirconium with trace alloying elements.
- Surface Oxide: Forms a thin, protective zirconium oxide film naturally; heat‑treated to black for added durability and aesthetics.
- Workability: Suitable for precision machining, but requires special precautions due to the flammability of chips and dust.
- Weight & Feel: Heavier than titanium; offers a dense, premium in‑hand balance.
- Finish Options: Stonewashed, brushed, polished, or heat‑treated black.
Finish & Care
- Everyday Care: Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and oils.
- Cleaning: Mild soap and water as needed; avoid abrasive cleaners that can alter the finish.
- Durability: The black oxide layer is integral to the metal, ensuring long‑lasting color.
At a Glance
